Run a good quality oil and you'll have nothing to worry about. If you go over to "Bob is the Oil Guy" they did a test with it in gear oils and it foams like crazy. In low demand applications, like a lightly used tractor, it'd probably be okay but at that point why do you need it?
Synthetics are probably way overkill in these old tractors too, the oils they started with were pretty primative so most any good dino oil today would be fine. I'm slowly changing my Super M over to detergent oil, eventually I'll end up on a good dino diesel oil like Delvac. I'm convinced that'll give good protection. Consider how long these machines ran with minimal maintenance and poor quality lubricants. Given what we have now they should last forever.

I run a lube testing lab in Pa. and have done
a fair amount of testing on the Lucas additive.
It is like a lot of others, well designed.

Spit the grit. What's the deal with additives?

Are we better off with additives added to standard oil versus using synthetic oil like Mobil 1?

I run synthetic oil in my cars and truck because of its temperature and viscosity stability, but I'd love to hear the real deal from an industry insider like yourself.

Inquiring minds want to know!!

I'll go with you on this one, Bill. Any decent oil today is designed with the needed additive packages already engineered into them. I've heard it said that some additive packages can actually be detrimental to the performance of your original oil additive package. Yes, why not just buy a quality motor oil in the first place? In my opinion, additives are like snake oil. If you think they are working, good for you. I'm more a "show me the beef" type of person, though.

Teflon additives, anyone? Give me a break! That's the biggest joke out there. It has been shown that teflon will not adhere to metal unless you use a special bonding process, at extremely high temperatures. And if teflon is so rugged, why do you need to use special cooking utensils when frying in a teflon pan? It simply scratches off too easily. Yet there are additive companies out there that will tell you that you get this "miracle bond" that will protect your engine parts forever.

I use it in everything I got. I put a quart in my M every time I change the oil. I put it in every case and diff. on my 4x4 pickup and it has over 260,000 miles on it.
