Hey there. I have been farming for 5 years with a 756 D. It is a great tractor, but I need more ponies for the ripper and chisel I am buying. I found a 1566 w/TA duals and a 3588 2+2 dls. both in great shape and fresh OH. These would both satisfy my HP need but I was wondering if all things were equal, which is better if I only want it for tillage (PTO not important)on 250 acres. I never drove them but I hear the 2+2 is a hard steerer, is that true? Thanks for any insights.

going from a 756 I would consider a 1086. Yes get a good one and I feel you will be happier with it than either of the 2 you are looking at. My 1086's were the easiest on fuel of anything I have ever had they will pull a 16'disk on 4 gallons per hour easily. My neighbor claims he pulls his 3 row silage cutter with his 1086 and it just uses a bit over 5 gph.
Had a friend trade from a 3588 to a 1486 and said he would never go back. With the 1086 you get manuverability and if you shed your tractor a 2+2 will take up as much room as the 1086 and a farmall M.

I would take a 2+2 over a 66 series tractor any day of the week. Our neighbor has a 2+2 he uses all the time, loves it.

i don't feel turning is a problem. i have a 3588. it will turn shorter than my 1086. the 2+2 will float and go (and steer) much easier in not-as-ideal conditions. one drawback to a 15xx is the 3 gear selections vs 4 speeds in the 3588. that may not be an issue in tillage but certainly could be with harvesting. keep the hinge joints greased on any 2+2. hth.

iowafarmer, Get the 1566! Avoid! the 2+2 like the plague. The ones I was around were problem ridden.
My $0.02.

Mornin' John,

Plus, it takes 40 yards of headland to turn 'em around. :>)

Thanks for the warning on the 2+2. I had been leaning toward the 1566, but traction was my only question. Do you guys see any problems with a 15?

None. Go get 'er.

Is that the one over there in MO? If so, looks like a pretty clean outfit.

As a heavy field tractor the 1566 is a stout tractor, and if its freshly overhauled you are looking at years (decades?) of use if its only working that small of acreage.

You said a mouthful there.

That 15 will handle 250 acres without even breaking a sweat.

I think it would be the perfect buy for this size operation.

Plus, after pushing that 756 around for the past 5 years, it's gonna take quite a number of years into the future just to get the smile off his face. :>)

The 1566 are hard on fuel no matter what your doing with them, I owuld go for the 2+2, more traction, a nice cab..... ..... ..
