Just finished painting our Farmall "M" and I used IH 2150 paint. The IH dealer said that I did not need to use hardner in the paint. However, my buddy who paints cars as a side business, said that I should have used hardner. Who is right?? Does the "hardner" help prevent scratches? I would appreciate your thought on this subject.

Since Case IH changed their paint vendor to Valspar { the same vendor Deere uses] I quit using hardner. You get a good shine without it

I don't think hardener will slow fading, it does cure much faster -- a couple of days instead of 3 or 4 months. It will result in a higher gloss, and probably make it more resistant to fuel spills, at least until the unhardened paint cures. I don't think it will make any difference as far as touching up chips and scratches. Where you might have a problem with touch up is if you use base coat-clear coat, which with 2150 is impossible. Modern paints, even the relatively low priced 2150 are immeasurably better than what came on your tractor, and properly applied, meaning over an epoxy primer, which in turn is applied over a properly prepared surface, will last much longer. The appearance of the paint, more than anything else depends on your painting skills. Good unhardened paint applied properly will look better than a lousy job of hardened paint.

Hardner will make your paint last much longer and be more resistant to damage from sunlight.

We use hardener with IH2150. We had a body man tell us the faster the paint can dry, it will keep it"s shine longer. Don"t over do it, or your paint will get "orange peely".

The hardener will help prevent small, light scratches but IH did not use such a thing when they built that M many years ago so why bother with it now? Paint with hardener will still scratch, only now you will have a deep nasty sratch that is very difficult to touch up. Without the hardener all you need is a small brush and a dab of paint and you can fix that scratch so most people will never notice it.

whos tractor is it, yours or your buddys? I don't use hardner and when I hook the chain I don't worry if it scratches the paint. It is MY paint!
