while plowing last year,[snow] I started to lose these gears, starting with 3, then 2 then 1 and while parking it, reverse. 1948 cub is now parked intill I can find the time to fix it, I also own a 1947, 1964[needs clutch] 1953,and 1949[for parts], can anyone tell me what Im planning on getting into when I tear the 1948 cub apart, and would it be easier to put the rearend off of the 49cub on instead of tearing everything apart?any input will be appreciated

Forgot to reply to one question.

No, it will not be easier but a ton of work. Fix the tranny. Probably won't even have to split the tractor. Most of it can be gotten through the shift plate. I think anyways.

Been there, done that, own one, even have a t-shirt with a picture of one on it.

Like several of us have said, pop the top of the tranny and have a look see. It doesn't seem likely that you would lose all four gears.

Still betting on the clutch.

If the problem is in the transmission or the clutch and not the shift mechanism you are going to have to split the tractor. I would not split two tractors to make one. Man that's a lot of extra work - twice the hoisting equipment, and take up a lot of space.

Just my opinion.

This sounds like a clutch to me too. Pop the top off around the shifter and check out the constant and slider gears to be sure. I need a main power jet for a 53 Cub (carb #251234R94) please call me at 618-732-8296 if you have a spare one you could sell.

Concur, it's probably the clutch. Pull the top off the transmission and check the gears and shifiting mechanism. You would/should have heard a crunch or bang as each gear (1st, 2nd, 3rd, reverse) went. I have lost transmission gears a couple of times. You know instantly when one gives out.

Thomas,

You symptom is coming right down the line like clockwork according to stress load placed on that unit....are you really sure it is not the clutch?

Don't all those gears run through the countershaft? 4th is the only one that's straight through, right?
