I have a lead on a John Deere two bottom hydraulic trailer plow. I was considering it to pull behind my H. Does anyone know what one of these plows goes for? (assuming it is field ready)

any insight is appreciated

Don't let anybody get you down, TC. When you find a two bottom plow you want, pull that sucker with your H and have fun. I have a model 60 McCormick 3-16" plow and I pulled 'er with my Super M. First time in about 35 years an M pulled a plow on this ridge, and it was quite the talk. Nobody could believe me that I pulled it until they saw it. Could only do it in 1st gear, but I still have rust on the bottoms that I have had a hard time removing until now, when I ground it with a wire wheel on a grinder and painted the bottoms with rust-enamel paint. Hopefully be up in second gear and have more consistancy this fall. By the time I finished plowing, the dirt was rolling nice and I was about 10"+ down and it didn't bust a nut pulling in first. Almost, almost to second. Will see soon. Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!!!

All these people that say an H won't pull two 14 inch plows need to find a mechanic. I was raised on H tractors in the Missouri hills. We had 2 Hs. One was originaly a distilate burner that had the high compression sleeves and pistons installed. It was equipped with fluid in the tires and 3 sets of weights. We used it to pull an IH plow with two 16 inch bottoms in red clay and rock. It had to work hard, but did a good job plowing about 7 to 8 inches deep. the other H had was a gas burner with standard sleeves and pistons and 2 sets of wheel weights only. It pulled a Case plow with two 14 inch plows. Most of our plowing was done in second, but it got done.

An H will pull a 2 x 14; the gear you use will depend on the soil and terrain. Around here, where it is hilly and and stony a some clay, I'd be suing 1st gear about as much if not more than 2nd gear. I've seen our part of the country make an M snort pulling 2 x 14.

Hey Dave!

Thanks for saying in two sentences what I tried to say in four pages and still didn't get the job done! :>)

No offence meant to this gentleman in any way, shape or form, but in my view, this is not plowing, this is just making a big mess.

The H will pull 2-14 in third. The price will vary from place to place 50-350.

Hi TC,

Not to be a smart A$$, but do you think that H is going to be big enough to pull a plow?

Hi Justin,

Yes, I know this all depends on soil type and such.

But, I say if ya put the darned thing in the ground, a H will not pull a plow very well. There is plowing and then there is plowing.

It always amazes me.

I watch these Dry-Landers go out with their little tractors equipped with way too many bottoms and think that they are plowing at 3 1/2 to 5" deep. That's not even plowing as far as I'm concerned; that's just scratching around.

Then, these same guys will come in behind with a field cultivator, which is also running at 4 or 5" and pull all that trash right back to the surface.

Try plowing under alfalfa this deep and the regrowth will beat you to the surface before you can get back home to the fuel barrel.

If your gonna plow, why not plow?

I've pulled more 2x14's than I'd care to remember, and if they are put in the ground at 8 to 10" where they belong, it is all a M wants in low gear; 2nd in the light spots. At least in this country anyway.

A 3x14 in heavy ground will flat bring a 560 or 656 to it's knees in 3rd.

Just my view and stated as such,

Allan

Do not really disagree with you but when I was plowing with H we had choice of H or mules. The land where I worked with H 2 bottom plow and 2 row planter and cultivator is now worked with 200 HP tractors and 12 row equipment

NDS,

Yep, I hooked a few tugs myself. Remember when a good set of draft harnesses was worth as much or more than the animal for which it was designed? :>)

An 80 acre farm used to be quite a handful for a farmer and his hired man.

Now, these acreages are handled in just a few hours from inside a cozy cab & with the use of a spray nozzle.

Progress, I guess. :>)

I don't want to get in a fight here Allan but 14 inch plows are designed to plow 7 inches deep. If you want to plow deeper get a bigger plow. An H will pull 2x14 just fine.

Mornin!

Naw, not me. I like to stir the pot.

Had a couple of 2x14 tumble plows. Used the H to pull 'em across the yard a time or two, but they were all that old M wanted in low gear when in use.

We all do it a little differently, I guess; makes the world spin.

They vary alot depending on the model and if they come with a cylinder. I have a set of 2 bottom hdyaulic lift JD plows I use with my H and the guy gave them to me to get rid of them. I had to buy a cylinder for them. Mine have Syracuse bottoms which have the old type of plow points and they are very expensive to replace and easily broken. If they have the old type plow points I personally wouldn"t give more than $50 if they were in otherwise decent shape and didn"t include the cylinder. I"m just guessing but maybe worth a couple of hundred dollars if they are the type of bottoms with bolt on plow points and includes a cylinder.

We farm mostly sandy loam but we also have some big clay knobs. An H will pull 2-14's all day long in second gear. My restored Super H pulls my Little Genius 2-14's in 3rd most of the time. Tougher fields I drop to 2nd but remember that is still almost 3/4 MPH faster than an H 2nd. Our Super M's will pull 3-16's anywhere. The power that it takes to pull a plow is usually a correlation of how the plow is set up. Shined up bottoms on a plow pull much easier than rusted bottoms. The longer you plow the easier it will pull until you get everthing shined up on the plow.
