My 350 diesel has gradually been smoking more and more. So far, the tractor doesn't seem to have any reduction of power, but the smoke cloud is pretty bad doing any field work and if the wind is towards me I find myself ducking alot to avoid the fumes. I looked at the owners manual description of how to verify and change the injection timing. It talks about turning the engine to the piston 1 compression stroke and using your fingers to spin the valve stems to verify they are loose. I'd rather not have to remove the tin and take the valve cover off to to this if there is an alternate way. Is there another way to verify the crankshaft position?

Remove the #1 injector and feel or listen for the piston coming up on compression. (Hey, you asked!)

Have you checked the intake to make sure there are no restrictions? I would clean the air cleaner if you haven't already done so, and make sure that there is nothing else restricting the intake air flow.
