Hello-

I've read the BN's PTO is 19 HP. Which confuses me...my old one-cylinder Craftsman lawn mower is 15 HP. Am I misunderstanding something?

Thanks.

ffolkes: Another thing is that the Craftsman is typically rated at the output shaft, whereas "real" tractors are typically rated at either the PTO (or belt pulley) or the drawbar. Both of these give a more accurate picture of "usable" horsepower. Drawbar hp in particular takes into account the amount of hp that is "wasted" in getting the tractor to move, which is a considerable amount. On a lawn tractor, the transmission, particularly a hydro transmission, can take up to a third of the tractor"s gross horsepower to operate it.

Another thing you need to consider is the fact that farm tractor HP is tested and validated. Your typical garden tractor manufacturer can say anything he wants, within some line of reason. I suspect that your Craftsman develops 15 PEAK hp. The question is.. how long does this peak last? Fractions of a second, I bet. You won't be able to pull a single 16 inch bottom plow all day long with the Craftsman.

Torque and cubic inches make the differences. I don't have my Nebraska tests handy but the B/BN had a maximum pull of something like 2500 lbs at about 2 miles per hour. Try that with your Craftsman. I do have the Farmall C Nebraska test. It was 21.12 hp and had a maximum pounds pull of 2902 lbs at 2.05 mph, just for comparison.

The newer engine has a higher compression ratio, breathes better, and runs between 2 and 3 times as fast!

I just can't picture my little mower driving a 5 ft. brushhog through tall grass and wild rose bushes.

But, the facts don't lie.

Thanks.

Facts don't lie, but can be misinterpreted or mis represented. What type of HP are we talking here ? Gross, Net, Stall, sustainable ?

Friend bought a new electric air compressor the other day. It says 6 HP on the motor, however the current requirements and the CFM of the compressor are almost exactly the same as his old compressor which says 2 HP on it. I don't think we are getting the specs to correctly compare things.

The moral is that the manufacturers have found that in confusion there is opportunity for increased profit. In sales it is all about perception not facts.

Motor is probably made in china. It takes 5 hp to run it and it puts out 1 so that's 6 chinese hp.
