Since everyone seems to agree, even a rebuild of the steering box will not ensure it"ll hold oil for long, I"m wanting to install a zerk somewhere on the steering box and just lube it with grease. Where have folks put these? Through the top plate? Or does one just stuff it with grease, bolt the plate back on top and forget about it? TIA

I agree with Digger. Pack it full, then seal it and forget it. That's what's called a "sealed bearing". It shouldn't go anywhere. Besides, unless there is a leak for the pressure to get past a seal or loose shaft, the grease gun could hyduralically split a casting.

Interesting idea greasing it though. Electric drills run that way for years.

Any place You put a zerk You'll still have to pull the grill off, and once You do that it's only four more capscrews to remove the gearbox cover.

I just packed it full of grease, put the lid back on and forgot about it on my 45 H.
