I could use a little help on testing a starter for a farmall H. The tractor will not start. At first I thought it was a dead battery. Took out the battery and left it on the charger all night. Returned the battery this morning and attempted to start the tractor, all I got was a "click." Pulled the starter and hooked jumper cables from battery negative post to starter case insuring a good ground. Hooked jumper cable to positive side of the battery and then touched the other end of the jumper cable to the post on the starter. All I got was a little spark--started did not spin.

Bad starter?

Also, this is a 6v tractor.

Should there be starter relay on this tractor? Currently the cable from the starter post runs to the starter button on the operator station, and then from the starter button the negative side of the battery, is this correct?

Thanks for your help

If you have an old battery, it still could be that the battery is dead. The problem would be that it won't hold a charge. The way to tell is with a voltmeter. Check the battery after charging and while trying to crank the motor.

As rustyfarmall indicated you should have gotten the starter to move. It sounds shorted out to me.I would remove the starter and

1) make sure it spins(by hand). Many of the starters I rebuild don't have the intermediate plate and bushing between the drive and coil housing which keeps dirt out of the coils and reduces the chance for the armature to bend when torqued too hard. Or the amature windings could be spun out and binding in the coil housing.

2) As rusty farmall said; pull the cummutator(brush) plate and check the brushes for wear. I would suspect that the starter stud is in need of resoldering. These are damaged when guys turn the stud when wrenching or have the starter engaged too long and melt out the solder.

These are the most obvious problems. Post back any questions.

Your starter button is wired correctly, the system is a positive ground, not negative ground as you are more familiar with. When using jumper cables to test the starter, connect the negative cable to the post on the starter, and the positive cable to the starter frame.
Actually, the starter should operate no matter how you made the connections. In other words, the starter doesn't care if it is negative ground or positive ground. You may want to remove the end plate from the starter and check out the condition of the brushes, they may be worn out.

You may also remove the steel band that is wrapped around the starter, this will allow you to look inside.
