Greetings:

I own three IH gas tractors: '73 Cub, '40 A and '59 460U. I want to get a diesel tractor. I keep hearing good things about the MF 135 with a Perkins diesel engine. I hear not great things about the earlier IH diesel engines (or Continental engines). I only own IH, but is this one time I should consider another brand? I am not looking for color wars here - just informed comments.

Do I need another tractor? Of course not. I want a diesel tractor so I can make my own biodiesel. The tractor would be used on 9 acres for moving dirt and snow, post hole digger, brushhoging, general utility type work.

Thanks in advance for all input.

Thanks for all the great input! Most of you have confirmed that an MF 135 is a good tractor. Thanks for reminding me that an IH 484 or 574 may also be quite useful. I do not see these tractors much in my area though. Now begins the looking. Thanks again!

Hi Doug, back in late 50's we had 300U and neighbor had MF35D which is mother of MF135.

The 300U would out pull and out power the MF35 on the PTO. The 300U had one downfall. It was a gas-aholic and would never pass a gas tank without wanting a drink. The MF35D was very easy on fuel and the Perkins Diesel was excellent but not as good as the German built IH Diesels in the 454,484,574,584,674,684 series tractors.

Just be careful with the MF135 as it is very light on the front end and will stand on end with heavy weight on 3 pt.

My 2 cents
JB

Doug. For my money the 484 is the tractor, Has the German D-79 Diesel, around 40+hp. Very reliable. All the goodies, and can be bought in the $3500 range. You can put a front end loader on or what ever. Great little utility tractor

Doug: No question the MF 35, 135, etc. with the 3 cylinder Perkins, the best little diesel ever built. They will run all day on 5 gal. of fuel. But the best part is they will run for years and years and years, trouble free. ( with good maintainence.)

They might match the 300 and 350 on pto work, although I rather doubt it. No match on drawbar work.

I have a 300U (gas) and a friend had a MF 2135 (gas). The MF was more tractor, and had differential lock, which I've always thought ranked right up with hydraulics as one of the most useful things to have on a tractor. I'll assume the 135 also has the diff lock. If so, and all else being the same I'd definitely take the MF 135 over the IH 350U, even though I love the heck out of my 300U.

Doug...my Dad was an IH man...I grew up on H & M Farmalls..still own an M today...But I switched to 4020 John Deere in 1968...still own that one also, had it restored...but in 1973 I bought a 135 MF..I still farm but added poultry houses to my operation...the 135 works every day doing something...it has proven to be one of the most dependable, and handiest tractors on my farm...you will love a 135

Buddy of mine has a MF135 with the perkins gas.
He's pretty tough on equipment. I've had to replace the high low planetary, main and pto clutch, ground speed pto drive gear. I guess he
tore it up stumping trees. The motor keeps on running. It's a bit loose right now with all the hrs and such. I guess it's a good tractor. I never really took much shine to MF.

Why not a IH 574 Diesel? I'd take a 135 Massey before a 350U Diesel for work, but I'd take a IH 574 over a Massey.

In my opinion, you will not find ANY better small tractors than the MF35/135 and MF50/150 especially when equipped with the Perkins 3-153 diesel. They are tough, little bulldogs, and the Perkins is downright miserly with the fuel.

Mornin' Doug,

I've never understood why people scream back and forth on the color of these old tractors. I think they are all great! They all do the job.

I draw the line on the foreign units, tho. But, maybe this is just my age kicking in or something. Dunno.

put an oil furnace in your house; maybe the shop too, and burn the biodiesel in that!
