My S/C couldn't be put in gear without shutting engine off. While driving it was OK. Pulled clutch to find the pilot bushing in several pieces. Tractor had probably sat a lot before I got it. What caused this to happen? Also the release bearing looks to be the "graphite" type. Would you recommend having it refaced, buying new one like it(if avaliable) or getting the ball bearing type? Thanks for any info!

Best is to get rid of the graphite release bearing and convert to the ball bearing. You will need the clutch release bearing holder and the bearing. Also, best to get the pilot bushing from IH and make sure the end of the shaft that goes into the pilot bearing is in good shape.

I would put in whatever the parts manual specifies. It is hard to guess what and why the previous owners might have done to it. It looks like it should be part number 350830R31 Bearing and retainer, clutch release, w/two fittings, 109454 (For tractors not equipped with hydar-creeper attachment. The 109454 are grease zerks.
