Well i got the tractor starting but cannot get it to even out and purr. Move timing adjust carb and it runs on all 4 good but pops. The 2 hash marks on pulley are dead center and the single is for??? How much free play should there be in the distributer where rotor attaches? Would that throw off timing? Thanks
Matt

Single mark is for alignment of the grease zerk to lube the clutch throwout bearing. Look under the clutch and locate the hole in the cast housing. 1 squirt is about all you need or excess grease can get onto the clutch surfaces.

LOOK, YOU HAVE RECEIVED SOME VERY GOOD HINTS/TIPS IN PAST. YOU SEEM TO BE CENTERED ON THE CARBURATOR. I'D BET YOU SCREWED SOMETHING ELSE UP ON THE OVERHAUL. YOU PREVIOUSLY SAID SOMEONE ELSE REBUILT THE CARBURATOR - THEY PROBABLY KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING.

SET THE IDLE SCREW AND MAIN (POWER) SCREW OUT ABOUT 2 1/4 TURNS. THEN KEEP YOU FINGERS OFF THE CARBURATOR.

RUN A COMPRESSION CHECK. I'LL BET THOSE VALVES ARE NOT CLOSING PROPERLY. TAPPETS?

GO BACK THROUGH SOME OF THE PREVIOUS ANSWERS, GET OUT THE SHOP MANUAL, AND DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING.

AS MUCH AS YOU HAVE SCREWED WITH THE CARBURATOR IT'S PROBABLY NOT YOU PROBLEM.

DISTRIBUTOR: THE ROTOR SHOULD MOVE, ONE WAY, AGAINST THE SPRING (ADVANCE), ABOUT 30 TO 36 DEGREES. THE ROTOR SHOULD NOT MOVE IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. IF YOU WIGGLE THE ROTOR SIDE TO SIDE YOU MIGHT FIND A LITTLE MOVEMENT, WHICH AT THIS POINT I WOULD NOT GET TO EXCITED ABOUT.

Matt: From the way you stated your problem and ask the question you did not look for the answer in the shop manual. If you don't have one get one. They cost about $30.00, available at most farm/tractor supply centers. The second thing you need to get for your tractor is a parts manual.

I am a retired shop instructor. Taught auto mechanics (tractors in rural areas) at the highschool and junior college level. If a student has asked about the timing marks I would have pointed them in the direction of the shop manuals.

Do the compression test. I'm betting the valve tappets are to tight.
