I removed the valve cover on my Super M for a valve adjustment and noticed an oil line running the length of the head and above the rockers. I assume its purpose is to shower oil down onto the rockers. The reason this part got my attention is that I just finished a 400 overhaul and this overhead oiler was NOT present on that tractor, but I do recall the ports being in the head and wondering what they were for. Now I know!

Is this line important? Should I be concerned about the 400?

Thanks.

Bill that is not an oiler it is a breather if you follow it all the way you will see it goes out the back of the head and into the air cleaner. The 400 should have had a short pipe at each end of the head to do the samw thing the tube that sets on top of the governer is part of this.

So, it is a breather. Thanks for setting me straight.

Bill - On the SM that tube is the "cylinder head breather". It ventilates the rocker box via a second, external tube running from the rear of the head to the air cleaner inlet.

Rocker shaft oil supply is provided by a tube and sleeve assembly mounted on the rocker shaft between the two middle cylinders.

I gotta think the 400 breather is the same (it uses the same C264 engine). Perhaps the head breather tube is missing on your 400??

Yes, this breather device is obviously missing. Anybody have one?

Bill if your 400 is factory IH it never used the pipe.As other reply said they used a short pipe
in front hole in head maybe 1 1/2 to 2 inch long.
Also rocker cover used a hole in top piped to air cleaner pipe.M and SM used a hole out back of head to air
cleaner pipe.M-SM cover only had bolt holes in it.
