I realize this is a long shot but if it pays off, it will save me many trips to the parts store.

I am converting a narrow front 656 to a wide front. I need to know what size bolts are used to fasten the wide front end onto the tractor.

Needless to say, the bolt holes are rusted and full of stuff since they have been empty since 1968.

If anyone has done this lately and remembers what size bolts are use, I'd be greatful.

I assume since they are going into casting, they will be coarse threaded bolts.

David don't use lock washers and I will tell you the old H M 400 450 had lock washers on the frame had had problems the 460 560 had star locks some better but unless some one changed you 656 it has no lock washers on the frame even with loader they stay tight same with wide front ends when IH left the washers off we had no more frames come loose.

The bolts are 3/4", course thread, not sure on the length. I would invest in a 3/4" tap to clean the threads before you try to put a bolt in there! You can get one online from Matco Tools for about $10. It will be money well spent. If memory serves, the bolts for the brace are 1/2" fine thread.

David I think 5/8 but what you need are grade 8 screws no lock washers as for tightness as they say tighten up till you trist them off then back up 1/4 turn and it will be on there for good.

Actually, the bolt's for that tractor are 3/4, coarse thread. I know this because I retrofitted a 656 front end onto a 300 (which uses the 5/8 bolts mentioned earlier). Use grade 8 with lock washers. I believe the bolts are 2 1/2" in length. -Z-
