966 PTO Problem

I've got a black dash 966 that doesn't want to spin the PTO shaft. I'm side dressing my corn and the only thing it has to do is spin the vapor pump when filling from the nurse tank and it can hardly do that. I looked at the book and it doesn't mention an adjustment. Is there an adjustment? If not what am I looking at having to do? I've never run any hard load on the PTO since I've had the tractor, about 5 years.

Jim

Jim, Be sure to check linkage from handle to control, seen pin shear, or linkage bind up and will not pull the control up at the PTO. Have seen this where PTO was running with partial engagement and burnt the clutches. Good luck. Jim. E.

Allan has got it right. There is also a coupler that you will want to be sure doesn't fall into the trans. It connects the PTO to the input shaft from the motor. They can be tricky to get back in, but with a little patience you should get it. The PTO is heavy so you should have someone help you lift it out and in. Hope it helps

there is a shaft that connects the trans to the pump. ( i think thats what pa is talking about. to get that to line up you might want to bump the start to get the splines to line up. bump it long enough to get it lined up. just make sure ya don't turn the throttle on.

Hi Jim,

Ouch!! Bad time for that thing to go out! Sounds like the clutches are slipping if it "tries" to turn.

I'm not an expert at these things, but the big dogs tell me that if you nose the tractor down in a road side ditch or some such thing, you won't have to drain the oil. You'll probably want to unhook that big NH3 applicator first to give you room to work.

The unit is self contained, so you should be able unbolt it and pull it out of there while tipping the "forward" end down.

That's what I'm told, at any rate; I've never had to change one tho.

Hope you get 'er goin' 'cause that corn is a growin'!

Do you have a little tractor that you could use to run the pump while your filling? You could just turn the pump 90 degrees on it's mount temporarily. You should be able to cock that tractor/applicator enough to let the little guy in.

Tryin' to help,

Allan
