I was told to get a 300 head and manifold and carburator and put it on my H to get a little more power. Is this right? I want to make sure I know what I want before I go looking. I just rebuilt the H engine but I did'nt touch the head because I could'nt find anything wrong with it. An extra 5 or 10 hp would be nice.

This is a common thing for pullers and such to do. I don't know what kind of HP increases you'll get, but I'd say 5 is a good guess. The finned manifold has better flow and the intake side stays cooler than the block manifold. I would suggest having the head shaved a little also. Do you have flat top or pop top pistons? An overbore piston kit or even going from flat-top to hig-comp. pistons will gain you more than a head change.

Changing to a 300 head will NOT give you that much more hp. but it will increase the compression ratio from 5.9 to approx 6.1 and you get rotors on the exhaust valves. A friend did this to his H. He installed 3 & 7/16 in sleeves and high altitude (domed) pistons. Milled about 60 thousands off the head. He said this gave him about 46 hp. and approx. 200 lbs. compression. This was with a 300 head, manifold and carburetor. Good luck.

Hi Ken,

Hmmmm, I don't know about that. Don't you think your friend might be elaborating just a little?

Maybe his compression gauge is off or something; it usually takes a compression ratio of around 11:1 to get those kinds of readings. 200lbs is pretty stout.

I would also question his horsepower. In reality, I'll bet it is more like 27 to 30 if it were measured at that drawbar.

But, I've been wrong a thousand times before and am the first to admit it.

Have a good one,

Allan

Hi Allen,
I don't know how correct the info is but I do know the person that gave the info to me is not a BS-er if you know what I mean. I can tell you he is getting more then 30 hp. because I get about that much hp. from my H. I have just regular IH Firecreator pistons (3-7/16") with a 300 head milled about one thousand just to clean up the head. I don't know if it ever was milled before I got the head though. I drove this H in question when I worked for this farmers dad back in 1961. At that time it was still a standard H with 9 speed transmission and the fast forth gear. They have had this H in many pulling contests and it always does good. Many first places over the years. It never stops scratching in low gear! It's one tough tractor, withstanding many hired hands over the years. When I worked for his dad we milked about 80 plus cows, now they milk over 130 cows.
