I am wondering what horsepower a farmall 460 has. I am looking at one, but will need it to pull an older 850 Hew Holland hay baler. Not sure if it will have enough guts.

You have it right. 450 - "M" etc. is a TRACTOR engine. 460 is a 1/2 ton toy truck engine. They sound great but a tractor enigine is greater!

I use a 706 with my 850 and it works real well . I did pull it with a 50+ HP 574 and it pulled its guts out the last half of the bale and never took it up the hill , stayed in the bottoms . I`d go for 60 HP or better .

I pull a NH 846, which only makes a 4ft. bale, and it's all my Farmall 460 will handle at the end of the bale. I can pull the baler in 2nd on level ground, but going up slight inclines I have to pull in 1st. I would suggest a larger tractor with that baler.

It seems that some say that the SMTA will out work the 460... I would agree - in the fuel consumption area and in maneuverability. But I also have a SMTA, and it will not pull my 7ft. bush hog in tall grass where the 460 will, let alone pull the 846 round baler.

You must've gotten a good 460. Any 460 I've ever heard of, the word "gutless" has always been attached. I think the issue is with torque. A Super MTA/400/450 has big honkin' pistons where the 460's pistons are presumably significantly smaller.

Horsepower is a product of torque and RPM. You can spin a little torque and a lot of RPM to get the same HP as a lot of torque and a little RPM. Tractors are all about lugging, and you need torque for that.

MBHP Nebraska = 49.47 or 51.63 (corrected)
MDBHP Nebraska = 45.38 or 47.24 (corrected)

As ACES said, "about 50".
