I don't know if I ever asked about this on this forum, but I'm gonna try (again) anyway...

We recently had my Dad's 756 gas converted to diesel using an IH DTA360 out of a 1987 prison bus. Problem is, there's no place to connect the mechanical drive for the tachometer because of the Bosch inline pump.

Does anybody know where to buy a 3000 RPM tachometer that uses a Hall effect sensor, senses impulses from the injector pump, or operates off impulses from the alternator? I found the perfect tach, manufactured by Faria Performance Instruments, but nobody sells them.

(I am not associated with them in any way, and they have GREAT products.)

Several “novel” ideas for you:

1 – Replace the existing alternator with one with a tach drive. This is a standard Delco 10SI modified to provide a standard tach cable drive out the back end. Were used on some MF and Case tractors for a while. Last time I checked TISCO cataloged them. Problem is they cost more than a standard alternator. And there will probably be drive ratio issues with your existing tach head.

2 – My Kenworth (Cummins-diesel) is equipped with a magnetic drive tach. A sensor screwed into the bellhousing senses flywheel ring gear teeth going past and sends an RPM signal to the tach head in the dash. It works great, but probably would be expensive to retrofit/calibrate to a tractor.

3 – Purchase a diesel tach that taps A.C. off the alternator. These are used a lot in marine applications - they work great. Teleflex is one manufacturer – I’m sure there’s others. Punch below for installation instructions from the Teleflex website. Teleflex stuff is readily available thru marinas, discount marine mail order houses, etc.

I would bet that the bus had a tachometer, how was it driven?

The bus's tach was driven mechanically, off a take-off in the front cover. The manifold pump used on the 66-series tractors has the tach drive built in. Inline pumps do not.

We used the front cover from an 886 to simplify the conversion. It was easier to modify the 886 front cover than it was to modify the tractor.
