Gentlemen,

I've posted on identification of this girl before, but didn't have a consensus. I think its a stage one Super H -- help me out.

I borrowed a digital camera and took the lead from Mr. Melville (spelling) and did the photo album thing. With photos from many angles and showing some interesting tidbits like serial number and dipstick (jal-SD).

A couple more questions for you guys:

Bob - Which of the castings is a date code?

What do you make of the yellow paint showing through on the left side of the engine.

Is the dipstick and lack of petcocks strange?

As I have never had a tractor apart (have had engines apart) - Can someone give me a quick overview of how the hydraulics work on this girl - I understand they are not live, and are single acting -- I often hear the term "belly pump" used here??

It appears this girl was built 24 years before I was - so I depend on you guys (yeah I'll have to spring for some manuals - but didn't want to til I knew exactly what I had)

Thanks

1. The date code that I saw was on the left side of the rear frame casting. It reads *5-25-Y*. Y stands for '53. Z='54. A='55 and so on.

2. It is probably not the original engine. Both the paint and the dipstick point to that fact. The engine probably an industrial engine and may have a "U" in its serial number. It may not even have a Super H bore. Check the upper right hand side of the block for more cast codes. Look for "C-1XX". The Xs will be numbers and the complete number will give you displacement. Should be C-175. Might be C-152 which is not "SuperSized".

3. Yes, you have a belly pump. The pump gets its power from the front of the transmission countershaft. The valve, reservoir, relief valve, and pump are all in one package. It puts out about 900 PSI. Don't know gallons per minutes but it might be around 8-10. IH has an external valve which can be added to give you double acting hydraulic power. However, any four-way open center valve will work.

A super H will have a C-164 displacement engine, the 175s came out with the 300.

It seems I can't tell my right from my left yet. The date code is on the right side of the rear frame.

There are usually around 6-8 of these codes. One on each of the major castings. Sometimes they don't mean too much. Some parts were stockpiled and allowed to age before machining.

My SMTA (ser # 60177) has a code on axel housing of August 5, 1953. The rear frame code is Jan 21, 1954. This tractor was probably produced during the first week of SMTA production which I assume was in February. Guy Fay says that the SM was discontinued on Feb 1, 1954. My rear frame didn't get much chance to cool off, age, get machined, and delivered to the assembly plant.

Eric - Definitely a Stage I Super H! Aside from the concrete(?) wheel weights it looks like an identical twin to my Stage I SH. The S/N and date code would indicate yours came off the line only a month or so before mine.

Nice tractor!! ...Bob M(elville)

I noticed the following:

1. It has the old style (countershaft driven) hydraulics.

2. Casting date of 25 May 1953 on rear frame.

3. Super H carburetter.

I would guess it is one of the last Stage I Super Hs.
