Greetings,

I'm in the process of buying my first tractor. I'm looking into a 350U diesel, but I had a couple questions which I figure someone here can probably answer.

First, I know the 350 diesel has a Continental engine, not IH. Is this a direct start or does it use glow plugs like the 460/560? Are parts still available for this engine? If so, does anyone have a good source?

Second, one of the tasks for the tractor will be to clear snow from the 1/4 mile long driveway. What's the best tool for this, a blade or loader bucket?

What model IH loader is suited for the 350?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I find a front blade moves snow much faster than can be done with a bucket. I have a 460U with a front bucket. I take the bucket off in the winter and put a blade in place of the bucket on the loader arms. It was a simple matter to build a bracket to mount blade. Make sure you can angle the blade. Pushing snow with a blade is all about weight on the back and chains for the rear tires. My 460U has calcium in the tires. I also put about an 800 pound 6 ft snow blower on the back. Buy chains that have a cross pattern and do not buy the highway brand. The chain on the highway brand just falls between the lugs and does not do its job. I have a 6.5 ft blade on the front because I had one lying around. I suspect your 350U could handle a 6.5 ft blade.

BTW, I live near Rochester, NY about 5 miles south of Lake Ontaria. It is not uncommon to get 12+ feet of snow per year.

The 350U Diesel is a direct start & some have intake manifold heater to aid cold weather starting. Engine parts can be found, but are expensive. Have one myself and have been pricing parts recently.
