Along with thinner bearing shells to dissipate the heat better, better wider gears in the transmission, larger bearings to handle the increased power, higher compression, redesigned combustion chambers, exhaust valve rotaters, Stage II had live hydraulics, disc brakes, etc.

About a million little things that make the Super H quite a bit different from the H...

Jim, Sometimes I just can't help being a smart a$$. The H has an "H" decal, and the Super H has a "Super H" decal. Seriously, if I'm not mistaken, some of the very early Super H's could have had band brakes, and they also had a belly pump. But the biggest difference between the stage I Super and the H was the increase of approximately 6 hp, and faster gearing. It took a while for some of the other differences to appear, as IH didn't necessarily implement all changes at the beginning of the model or model year.

The H had a bore of 3 3/8 inches, engine displacement of 152 cubic inches, and rated drawbar hp of 25. The Super H had a bore of 3 1/2 inches, engine displacement of 164 cubic inches, and rated drawbar hp of 31.

Jed is right about the brakes; maintain them religiously each year.

The differences between an H and Super H are more than just what has been mentioned. You have to drive both to see the difference but the Super H is more tractor than an H.

SH also has disc brakes and they can be bad news if not maintained. They also have faster gearing. The idea was you get more farming done because it is quicker than an old H.

Super Hs are newer, have more horsepower, and live hydraulics. The supers were built in 1953 and 1954.

I believe that Super H production started in 1952. The early ones did not have live hydraulics and the battery was not under the seat. I'm not sure that as many upgrades were made on the Super H as there were on the Super M.

I have a stage one 53 super H without live hydraulics and it has the battery under the gas tank.
