I have a chance to purchase a Mott Hammerknife mower and assorted bracketry. Curiosity killed the cat though, will it out perform my Woods 42C (which is worn out beyond all repair) or should I look for another 42C to mow the yard? Also, what seems like reasonble price for the mower and about 20 spare knives? Thanks a bunch!

Rob,

If you choose not to buy the Mott, I'm interested in possibly getting in line behind you. I have a Mott flail mower for a Cub LoBoy with fasthitch, and need the PTO half shaft from the tractor to the Mott, and a few other assorted parts. Let me know if you don't go for it.

Good luck otherwise; I'm told they work pretty well on shorter dry grass.

Cheerio

John

When I was a teenager and Dad was running a custom mowing service [I mowed in the daytime, Dad mowed after 6], he traded for a Cub with a Mott Hammerknife. My experience says that (1) in tall stuff, if you keep your blades sharp, the Woods 42 is as good as any bush hog (footnote: my brother proved that, even if you install the blades BACKWARDS, it WILL still cut, but it won't be pretty and it pulls a lot harder); and (2) The Mott will have difficulty with really tall stuff, as John mentioned, and it won't cut well when the grass is wet (heavy dew). Otherwise, my opinion is that the Mott will give a LAWN a more manicured look, but the Woods will cut off darm near anything you can get under a Cub.

So the choice gets down to just exactly what you want to use it for. Mott is tops for strictly lawns, but Woods 42 is best for all-around usage.

Each one has it's advantages. The Woods gives a little smoother cut (in my opinion), but the Mott won't throw rocks or sticks. The Mott's biggest drawback is that if you are trying to mow tall (front wheel high) stringy grass such as fescue, it tends to wrap up around shaft. I have owned both, and decided to sell the Woods and keep the Mott.
