Replaced cables last night and wire brushed all connections. Still didn't start. One guy stated that it may be the starter. Could it be?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,Jon or whatever,You really need to double check that timing. Also may want ot give the carb a look see too, just in case.I had a Cthat wouldnt start uinless it was pulled, turned out the carb was the problem.

If you have a mag,the impulse isnt working. When you pull it you are spinning the egine faster than the starter allowing it to start.

I had an early super M years ago that had similar symptoms, it would start with the starter, but would not fire while the starter was spinning. This tractor had been switched to 12 volt, so the engine spun fast enough to continue spinning after releasing the start button, and then it would fire up and run. If I remember right, it had something to do with either an improper ignition coil, the wrong ballast resistor, or maybe a combination of both. I think I would try a different coil and maybe eliminate the external resistor.

Ok, when I hit the starter button it cranks over with good speed. Plugs are wet, spark is coming from coil wire a good 1/4 inch jump. Spark plugs seem to get good spark. Like I stated yesterday, tractor runs good when you pullstart it. Hope I answered all your questions.

Thanks in advance

Check you timing. I had one farmall H that was out of time it di the same thing it would roll over good not start not start pull start it and wham it would run in lest than 10 feet. I don't know why but I checked the timing and it was off fixed it and it runs good. Also had a problem with the carb one time. pull start it would start up. I just think that maybe that when you pull start it that it rolls it over at a little faster speed than the starter.
and yes it would run good after pull started.
one other thing you can try to do is hook up a 12 volt battery to roll it over. that might just be enough jucie there to start it. I know it isn't really the safest thing to do but it worked for a test.
good luck
Chad

If the tractor turns over adequately when you press the starter button and it doesn't start and run, the problem isn't the starter. If the tractor turns over in-adequately or not at all when you press the sarter button, it could possibly be the starter. It could also be a low or drained battery, bad starter button, or perhaps you still have a bad connection someplace. Check all that out first before you go pulling a starter that might not be the problem.

Good grief. All this and you still haven't answered the basic question about what the tractor is doing when you engage the starter.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HIT THE STARTER BUTTON? If the engine doesn't even roll over when you hit the starter, you can replace ignition components until the sun goes supernova, and it won't help.

When diagnosing a problem, you have to observe what is happening and make logical educated guesses as to what the problem is. So far, you've just gotten out the "parts shotgun" and blasted away at random.

On my B I had just finished painting it and the starter would not engage. It was not making a good ground. I had to scrap off my new paint to get it grounded. If this is the problem check it with a ohm meter to see that you have continuity.

We need to know if it's turning over good or just slowly turning over. Then we know which way to go to diagnose your problem.

They're not supposed to start on their own, they are supposed to start when you push the starter button.

But seriously folks... I think we need some more details.

Mark, Several things can keep an engine from starting, not getting fuel, points, plugs condenser, wiring, timing, and a few more,if your starter is turning the engine well the problem would not be the starter, do some trouble shooting on some of the things I mentioned and maybe you can find your problem. Hope this helps. Ed
