I have a 1951 model M my daddy bought new in 1951 still has original paint and seat but much modified with power steering, 3 pt and live pump. Strictly a working tractor. Would like to add flat top fenders from a 706 or 3020 JD. Local welding shop would make brackets.will be painted IHC red. What do you all think? perhaps some other makes of fenders?

I've been thinking the exact same idea. I, too, have a 1951 M. Mine has a front loader, and the stalk mounted lights reflect wrong off the back of the bucket. So, I wanted the 656 fenders with the twin headlights to avoid this problem.

See an earlier post of mine about a pointless question regarding fenders. :-) I have been told that the 656 FlatTops have the same bolt patterns as the M and H fenders. These fenders were reported to be on the '06 tractors and the '56 tractors from about 1966 or 1965 up into the 1970's. This is all stuff I picked up off this site, so I can't vouch for the quality of the information. Rest assured, the next time I visit my in-laws in Iowa, I'll be hunting a pair of these fenders. :-)

As to the purists, I like what one person said to my post: if it makes a working tractor safer, purism don't matter. Also remember, farmers have been modifying their tractors since the first ones rolled off the line. Its part of our culture. There aren't too many purists around, and most folk on this board are great folk either way.

I once had a neighbor who mounted fenders from a John Deere on an M, painted red, they looked like they could have been original.

I went the other way on my IH504. It came from the factory with the clamshell fenders, we used it for years that way on the dairy farm. In 1993 I retired the 504 to tractor pulling duty only, and wanted to install a set of 18.4x26 combine tires to increase first gear ground speed and traction. The much wider tires wouldn't fit with the clamshell fenders. I wouldn't allow my daughter to pull the 504 without fenders so I installed the fenders off my Grandad's H that I have. Looks great and protects your legs! I'm now refurbishing the 504 clamshell fenders to put on my Farmall 460 that I bought last fall, which had no fenders on it when I got it. This tractor is also retired from field work now and will strut her stuff on the local tracks this summer. Don

I have mentioned before that I thought a set of flat top fenders off of an Oliver, like a 1600 or 1750, would look good on an M. I bet some one has done it, and I would sure like to see a photo of one.

If it's a working tractor, flat tops are great. Some folks use Deere fenders on Ms, some use Oliver fenders. Can't remember which the neighbor used, but painted red they looked like they belonged there.

One of the nifty things about old farm equipment is looking at how old farmers modified things to suit their needs. Do it if you want and need it.
I agree, though. Don't deface the tractor in a way that can't be changed back.

Dave, Theres a guy about 30 miles from here who has an "M" with front wheel drive assist. Dont know who made it, but was made to fit the "M". I told him that all he needed was "W6" fenders and he would have a High seat wheatland "M". He said that may be his next project. He may have been joshing me, but I thought it sounded good anyway.

That would be something to see. I have never needed it on mine but have used it on the Ford a lot of times. Been a few places I never would have got thru without it. I would have liked to have looked at that. Narrow or wide front? That could be pretty handy under the right circumstances.

Anything you do to your tractor is OK.

I like to see people not put on things which are not reversible later, though.

I have a 1940 M serial # 14815, and It has three point hitch, live two way hydraulic, wide front end, and flat top fenders where I mounted a dual lever hydraulic control, and I made most of this stuff or at least installed it all myself, and don't have hardly anything in it. And once you get the flat tops on, you will wonder how you ever got along without them. You can bungee your water jug to them, mount a toolbox on them, mount your hydro controls on them, and after about an hour when your butt gets tired, you can lean over and put your elbow on one or the other and rest the other cheek a little, and if you're really stupid like me, and on a level flat field, you can sit on one and watch back to see what you are doing behind you and not have to crink your neck around, although I know guys, this ain't safe, smart, logical, or even worthy of mentioning, but it has been done. Anyway, I built the flat tops out of 2x2 square tubing and 1/8 " flat steel, and then painted them and edged them so they weren't sharp, and i wouldn't be without them. Good luck.
