Cub Tank Hood

On one of my road trips, I picked up a Cub parts tractor that has a great hood, but the gas tank has been cut away. It looks like someone used one of those air powered shears that cut sheet metal. The bottom of the tank is still there, but the top, shaped part is cut away, leaving about a 1/2" "strip" of material. My question, (besides why would someone do this) is: Can the Cub gas tank & hood assembly be "broken" into two sections? I thought they were more or less welded together at the factory. Were any of the Cub hoods/tanks ever supplied in two separate sections?

Maybe the guy thought there was something in the tank worth fixing. I think there's just the baffle. Or...maybe he wanted storage space.

Seriously, why someone would cut away the top section of the gas tank mystifies me. I've heard of separating the hood from tank, but not this. It's possible that they wanted to clean and seal the tank really well and began the process, but changed their minds for some reason.

I asked near the same question a while back,my hood was shot, but the tank was perfect, later I found one with a perfect hood section and poor tank.I wanted to put the two together, but was told Id be better off finding a good hood/tank together, and these folks were right.most likely soneone did the hood that way to make it easier to remove without unbolting everything.
