I have a Farmall 300 row crop that runs good, but smokes pretty bad. It set for quite a few years before we got it going.

Will this smokiness work itself out or am I gonna have to get the motor overhauled?

Could the smokiness be due to bad o-rings in the sleeves?

How much would it cost to have the engine overhauled?

Clutch sticks sometimes and the TA is out. How much would fixing this stuff cost?

I like the tractor, but it is old and tired.

If the smokiness fixes itself, be sure to buy a lottery ticket.

I rebuilt the motor on my H this fall. It ran $2200 for parts. It took new (IH, more $$) sleeves and pistons, reman 8086 head, new bearings, reground cam and lifters, new gaskets and seals, new pressure plate, hoses, etc. If someone else is doing the work, it will be more.

Now the H is worth $1500, but I think that it was money well spent. I could have bought 1/10th of a new tractor that looks like a big lawn mower.

Michael: While these guys gave you some good figures on specific items. No one can tell you exactly what you are going to run into on a specific tractor. Some former owners keep their tractors maintained very well, while others will do bare bones repairs, and fix absolutely nothing until it completely fails. Surprisingly these machines can run a lot of years with a lot of components in poor condition. I used to think if appearence was good, chances were, good maintainence was done. Not necessarily so. I have also seen tractors I'm certain have done little work, yet I have to ask myself how they busted so much up, doing so little with tractor. You can get some real good advice on spicific items. However on a complete tractor restoration, only you will know when you are done.

Run from anybody who would give you a $ price for a tractor repair. There is no way he can quote you a price and fix it at a reasonable cost to you. He will have to figure every possible thing that can be wrong with it. When I worked for a Ford dealer a Fordson Major Diesel came in from a commercial user and they wanted a quote for replacing the rear end. We assumed that the ring gear and pinion were out and figured everything. When we got in to it we found that the rivets holding rhe ring gear were sheared. The rivets were replaced with bolts as the manufacturer reccomended and we were finished in a half day and parts cost was minimal. Moral of the story no HONEST repairman will quote you a price unless you drive him into a corner and then he has to cover himself.

When I did my Super C the tires where by far the biggest $ item. Sit down and make a list and add it all up. Then X 2 for all the stuff you didn't think of and the hours driving to find parts. But hey, you can't put a price on fun and satisfaction. The only people makeing any money on old tractors is the guys stripping them down and selling them part by part on e-bay.

The smoking could be caused by the cylinder head valve seats also. Rebuild work on the head may cost from 150 to 200 bucks at the machine shop. Rebuild kits for the block run about $800(cam, crank and rod bearings with a piston and sleeve kit). I would pull the head and oil pan and check out your cylinders and bearing clearances.

Sounds like you may need to clean up the clutch and bearings. New throw-out and pilot bearings aren't too expensive. You could probably clean up what you have and make it work okay.

T/A is rebuilds run about $400 for the unit.. get a I&T shop manual and make sure you T/A clutch is adjusted properly with the main clutch linkage. You'll have to split the tractor to replace the TA.

Sounds like you'll have a nice 300 when you're done.

Michael; I had a 300 I had purchased. I figured it would need at least rings and valves and bearings. I used it thru the summer and we pulled the engine and took it in to my mechanic. We ended up putting in clutch and TA. New crankshaft and getting the head repaired.New sleeves and pistons and valves I believe. Dont remember what it cost for repairs but it shows you can get alot of money tied up in repairs.
