I have an Ag Ed student working on a 450 in our school shop. He came in with a serious amount of water in his crankcase. We have taken it down to removing the head, pistons and all panels. Can not seem to find the source of the leak. I laid under the tractor all fifth period today with a trouble light watching for a static leak and found nothing. Any trouble shooting hints?

I have repaired several engines with water in the oil, most of them just had bad sleeve o-rings. Often you have to pressurise the cooling system before you see any leak. Others have had cracks in block or head, small cracks often leak when engine is at operating temp. Good luck. /Dennis

i think 42farmall is right, i had a ud236 in a trojan loader , had no raincap on it when i bought it, when i changed the oil all water came out and ice had formed in the oil pan and cracked the pan, rain and snow got into pan thru exhaust, check it out and good luck

One thing you can check is where the studs pass through the head. I had an H that a hole developed between the water cavity and where the stud passes through the head. Simply installing a brass washer under the nut sealed it and it works great.

I had a 400 engine with a pinhole in the block against a sleeve. Coolant would seep out against the sleeve, and then work its way to the bottom of the sleeve and drip into the pan. This was a very SLOW leak. Place newspapers under the motor overnight and see what you find.

Water in the crankcase? Or was it antifreeze?

Antifreeze points to cracked block or head. Just water points to water through the exhaust or simple condensation...

The older IH have a serious problem with the threaded exhaust pipe coming loose and water running down it straight into the manifold - I've seen it several times. And a rain cap is no defense against rain, all my tractors spew water out the exhaust after a good rain...
