Kelly, I enjoyed going through your trailer project. Was wondering about size and GVW? The old trailer I rebuilt a couple of years ago is fine for the A and Super A but I wouldnt put more than 4000lbs on it. If you didnt get that kind of deal on the axles how much would you have saved? Now I know what I can use my new bucket loader for!
Thanks again.

Its 82 inches wide by 16 feet long. The axels are 3500 pound axles each and both have brakes.
The axles did save me alot. Got them for what just new tires cost.
GVW I guess would be the same as any 7000 pound trailer.
I have had my H on it and it pulls fine with that.
I wouldnt be afraid to go any where with that. I have also pulled my 400 on it. The 400 wont fit between the fenders and has to sit to far back.
And it very heavy for the trailer. I would use it to get to a haying job 15-20 miles tops.
If you make one make one that is a deck over the axles. and at least 7 feet wide. 8 feet would be more usefull.

Sorta looking at like you are I built two a few years ago. Got in my mind what I wanted and went to a lot that sold trailers and found one I liked and took a lot of measurements. Got the steel form a recycle yard and the other components from Northern. Turned out well so I sold it for enough to pay for that one plus buy the materials for another one so I had me a nice trailer for just my work UNTILL a friend decided that he needed to use it more than me but wanted it registered with tags and all so I told him to register it and if I ever need it I will come borrow it from him.

There's a pretty good book you can buy. It's called "Trailers, How to Design & Build",(Volume 1 Basics) by M.M. Smith. Copyright 1995, ISBN 0-914483-31-5. I own it and it's excellent! It covers design, metals, axles, brakes, wiring, hitches, welding, etc.

I couldn't find it on booksamillion dot com but I didn't look long, and I didn't try other sites like Barnes and Noble, Hastings, etc.

ALSO try tjtrailers dot com. They sell blueprints of all kinds for about $25. You can look at them and see what you think. You'll incorporate your own ideas, but with a well designed trailer, at least you'll know it's engineered to handle specific loads.

Good luck.

Having just built one I can say this. Go to the scrap yard for the metal, it's cheap there. Shop around for the axiles, you will need brakes. Also shop for the electrical lights and wire, walmart is a rip off. I found the best prices for everything buy shopping around. Unless you are a good welder, more is better. Keep the weight in mind, in Canada, if the Trailer, Load, and tow veicle exceed 10,000lbs. you need to have both certified yearly.

My 2cents.

Well I have built many trailors, the one thing to make sure of is that every thing is true and stright. As far as a 18X7 I wouldn't I'd go with an 18X8 or 8.5, 8.5 is as wide as you can go and be legal. Why I say 8 is because you will find more things fit. Of course you could always but the one I have and finish it, never got around to that
