10' Wheel Disk to much for '46 H?

Looking for a disk for my H and saw an upcoming auction that has an IHC 10' wheel disk going up for sale.

Wondering if this would be too much of a disk for my H, at the limit of its capability, or should do fine.

Soil where I will be using it has good amount of clay, rolling hillside with some small rock.

Thanks for your advice, Jim

I use a 300u to pull a 10 ft tamdem disk- it is worn, but it was a real load for my 300. Irv

My old H pulls my IH # 37, 9 and a half foot disk with no weight on the boxes and the angle about half way. It is short on power and weight but it has pulled it many hours,I have to pull in 1st and 2nd gear. An 8 Footer would be perfect.

Jim: There must be a lot of worn out disks across North America. A good wheel controlled disk with 18" notched disk blades will require 1 hp per blade. You will get by with slightly less hp on 16" blades. 18 and 20 inch blades worn down to 16 inch arent worth a tinkers damn.

If an H or a 240 is pulling a 10' or more tandem disk, the disk is not much good. In fact I suggest a land roller would do as well.

I can tell you with authority that Hugh is right about this.I pulled a 5 foot disc many many days with a 1947 H in late 50's and early 60's in north Ms. If you were cutting stalks before breaking the ground, you might use 4th gear because the disc wouldn't go very deep. But after you broke it 6 or 7 inches deep, and dirt was running over the disc axles, it was 3rd gear at best. Steve Norwood, Texarkana.

Width of disk is just one factor in determining what you can pull. Just as important is diameter and pitch of disk blades, scalloped vs smooth disks, weight on disk and angle of cut. I do not doubt that H will pull 10 ft. under some conditions but where I live H is not going to pull 10 ft. with new scalloped disks with all angle in that is in plowed ground and cutting. They only pull 18 ft. with 150 HP tractors with duals.

Neighbor's 11 foot wheel disk was all my worn, distillate H wanted in 1st gear. I want to try it again after rebuilding the motor.

Are you referring to what we called a "tandem disk" when I was growing up? A 10 foot tandem, in soft soil, will be a bit much for an H. In clay or other hard soils where you do not get much penetration, you shouldn't have any problems. A 10 foot single disk shouldn't be any problem, no matter what the soil type.

Pulled a 10ft IH disk with a 240 Utility which is 28 hp. I went as deep as it could go and I was in 2nd gear. The disk was the kind where you have to remove pin, drive forward, and put the pin back in.

I pull a 12 foot disc with my H. It doesn't have wheels, it's the one that just rides on the ground. It will pull it fine in 2nd gear as deep as you want. 3rd gear you can't go quite as deep, but it still pulls it OK.

I have the low compression distillate engine too...
