Hey, y'all.
I'm about to buy an ORC for my SA (alphabet soup!)-- should I go plop down the dollars at my local Case-IH dealer, or would a generic TSC or eBay ORC be just as good? There are some for around $30 on eBay right now.

Thanks,
Darren

OK Guys I got one for my '56 400. Did I need to? I just did because it's better safe than sorry.

GT: You really don't need these with live or independant PTO. Read Bob's post below. If you want to use it it can't hurt anything other than wear in the ORC itself. I have never used one however I suspect the higher the hp the more trouble they will be. I doubt if they will even stand much over 50 hp.

Thanks Hugh, I suppose a little overkill is better than thinking I might run into my house. I could have used the length when I finally got a new PTO shaft for my mower. I just took it to Drive Shaft King and got it shortened a little.

Don't think a 300 needs one, as it's got live PTO. The purpose of the ORC is to keep the spinning blade of a bush hog or some other PTO driven device with lot's of rotational energy from pushing your tractor when you want, or need to stop quickly. Older tractors without live PTO have the transmission and PTO operating from the same clutch, so pushing the clutch in doesn't disconnect the stored energy in your implement from your drive wheels. The ORC is like a ratchet wrench in that it will transmit power (in one direction) to your implement, but not transmit power from the implement to the tractor. It can be very dangerous to operate a non-live PTO tractor without an ORC.

Darren: Those ORC's I'll bet are all made by 1 or 2 manufacturers, and I rather doubt CaseIH is one of them.

Darren, Don't know that IH makes their own. The Case dealer I work for simply buys 'em from Tractor Supply, and then marks 'em up. Even if you find some with official IH or Ford, or JD...markings, they're still gonna be what ya buy at TS, or from Tisco...I think they are $65 bucks at our parts dept. Pete
