I am looking at buying a farmall A that has been used for plowing. What are some things I should look for that would indicate the tractor is or isn't in reasonably good shape. (can use all the advice I can get).

I have a 1940 (a) and a 1942 (h) and have learned the hard way on both of these purchases !
I bought the (a) to restore, and after getting it home realized that it was missing a ton of parts. After trying to get it running I found that both the head and block were cracked.I have a lot of money in the but it is almost completed. When I bought the (h) I noticed that it smoked pretty bad, The owner told me that it always clears up once it gets warmed up. I knew from reading this forum that these h's were known for popping out of 4th and 5th gear. So I asked the owner if he ever had this problem. He replied no she runs great ! 4 months later I now know that the smoke doesent clear up and it pops out of 4th gear. To make a long story short dont beleive anything anyone tells you, physicaly get on the tractor you are looking at buying, run it thrugh all the gears, at all rpm ranges, Be sure that there is no white or black smoke from the exhaust, operate the power take off, use the brakes etc , etc.open the oil check petcock to insure that there is no water in the oil. If the oil is milky or whitish in color this indicates coolant in the oil.
Good luck with your purchase !
