does anyone know if there is any way to determine the valve length on an (h) without actually having them out ? I want to order the new ones ahead of time if I can so that I can get it apart and then back together quicker.

if you have the valve cover off you can read the casting number on the head.

I'm going thought the head on my H now and it is best to go ahead pull the valves to see if the guides need replaceing and have the valves reseated it cast me 55.00 to have new guides and to reseat my valves. I would also have them reface the head to make sure its flat. But your 1942 H sould have 5-3/8 valves if it has the high compression head which will be stamped 8043D my 1945 H did the later ones have the longer valves.
