Mitch: Mike is dead-on with his reply. I will add that IHC was concerned about safety and the change to red was to make the tractors more visible while on public roads. The expanded usage of rubber tires allowed more tractor road time without attracting the ire of the local gendarmes.

The reason for the switch to red supposedly was that with the advent of rubber tires and thereby the increasing frequency of tractors operating on roadways, red tractors would be easier to see.

IHC used two different paint schemes for the F-12, 20, and 30 tractors. Before November, 1936, the scheme was red wheels and gray everything else. After this date, which would have been for 1937 model year tractors, IHC went to an all red paint scheme in order to give their tractors a new look.
