Hello,
I have a 300 row crop with a 12V battery, lamps, and alternator. Having read some posts here, probably just enough to be dangerous, I am wondering if 1: is there supposed to be a resistor in line with the coil?
2: is this resistor here only to allow a 6v coil to operate in a 12v system.

Why? I am going to be replacing plugs, wires, and coil, dist cap as they are quite old and showing it. I'd like to know if I need a 6v or 12v coil.

Thanks gents.

Bill
Their are 6 volt coils and 12 volt coils, you must use a 12 volt coil with a 12 volt system.
You will still need a resistor of some kind, either
the external type for a stsndard non resistor coil
or some coils have a built in or internal resistor
If you do not use a resistor, your ignition points
will arc too much and burn up quickly.
Somtimes a direct feed 12 volt line from the starter feed line to the coil in addition to the
resistor feed line, this gives the coil direct 12 volts only when the starter is enguaged and helps to start engines in cold weather

If everything else is 12 volt, that means your coil also is - unless there is a resistor in line with the hot feed (whichever one has juice when switch is on). I personally just put in a 12 volt coil when I did my conversion to alleviate one more thing to go wrong (the resistor).

Thanks riverrat

I use chev coils from a 1970 chev pickup truck with a 250 engine they are cheaper then ford parts and work very well

I used the standard Ford coil on 70's style V8s. Any 12 volt coil will work as long as there are 2 smaller connectors on either side of the coil wire tower, a + and a - . - hooks to distributor wire and + hooks to "on" from ignition switch.
