I want to buy an old plow to go behind my 300 and/or M. What is the proper plow?

How big of a plow can these tractors pull?

Are the 300 and the M "stock" in terms of conditon and horsepower? If so, a 3-14 plow is a good match for either.

In most parts of the midwest, a stock M will handle a 3-14 plow easily. The 300 will also pull it, but will work a bit harder in the tough places unless you've got T/A to bail you out. Lots of the 300 row-crops have had the governor opened up to run the extra rpms that the utility models were given at the factory. If that's been done, the raw horsepower is very close to the same, and the 300 will likely move a bit faster in each gear than the M.

A great many of the M species have been re-powered with oversize and high-compression sleeve/piston sets. Those tractors can often dyno at 50 hp. I've got an M like that, and it would pull a 4-14 Moline plow anywhere on our farm in 2nd, and most places in 3rd.

The 300 and the M will pull very comparable loads in stock form. The gear ratios for 2nd and 3rd are closer on the M, which will give it an edge. The extra engine displacement will also let it lug a bit better.

Adding to comments, my dad overhauled our M a number of times and had the horsepower at 50 or slightly over. He had fluid in the tires, widened rims, and two sets of weights to hold it. Problem was in our eastern Kansas soils 3rd gear would go out the 2nd day pulling 4-14's. Second gear would handle it.

Michael: My dad plowed for years with 2x14 Little Genius No.8 behind W4, H and later 300. While it was load enough for W4 and H, with the 300 you hardly knew it was back there. I later bought a No.60 3x16 and plowed a good many acres with it behind 300. I also had a No.60 4x16 I used behind 560D. I will say 560 handled 4 bottom easier than 300 did the three bottom. I have worked these two plows in same field together and will say 560 didn't chase the 300. The 300 just worked a bit harder. My last plow was a 5x16 semi mount I pulled with 656D. My soil was a sandy loam, and there are harder soils to plow.

How good of a job do you want to do? Had a M and pulled 3-16's comfortably on flat to gentle hills at about 6-8 inches. 3-14's would probably be better depending on conditions. A 300 might struggle with something in that range, I'm not sure but I think thats a little smaller than a M so adjust accordingly. Dom

Depends on conditions but I would stick with a 2 bottom. In some conditions the M will pull 3 easy but you get in a wet year and you spin your tires and look silly. I have hosted plowday 3 years now plowing 60 - 80 acres, and just don't get good conditions. The first year we waited a week and it was still too wet. The next year the wind blew a gale and dusty; yes, it was dusty, couldn't hardly get the plows in the ground. Then last year it snowed! Are you planning on coming?

One of these days I hope to attend a plowing bee, but I'm in NE Iowa. Thanks for the invite just the same.
