O.K. you guys with all the experience. Cough up some secrets on getting more horses out of my 300 Row Crop. It dyno's about 40, which it's supposed to, but I'd sure like to find about 20 more. Yes I've already been told to get a Super M !

ChadS is right on target! Also...you can make that engine just a bit more agressive by raising the rpm limit. The 300 Utility models were set at a higher stock rpm at the factory. Back in the 1950s, when these things were new, our local IH dealership pushed the rpm setting up on the row-crop models to the Utility level before they ever left the store.

I can tell you how to get half that amout and spend less than $300 doing it for parts, I am not trying to sell anything here,, but I have the parts I will mention. First,, rebuild the carb and dist. When you rebuild the carb,, drill the main jet size out a little,, If you are familiar with the small numbered drill bits,, they are available at any hardware store. Or just take the carb base with you to the store and match the jet size with a drill bit, Buy a bit that is about 3to 4 sizes bigger. Remove the metering stem,, before you drill the jet!! With the same bit,, drill out the bottom 2 holes on the metering stem, That will give you the fuel the engine needs. Next,, go to the parts store and get a chevrolet distributor curve kit. The kit has 3 sets of springs and 1 set of weights for the mechanical advance in the distributor. All you want is the springs,, There is 3 different springs in the kit,, color coded,, gold, black and silver,, use the gold set,, the lightest spring. it allows the dist, to advance faster during acceleration. giving it more throttle responce. Next the governor spring. Get a stiffer spring,, stock springs are good enough to barely get to stock rpms,, when you use a stiff spring,, you will be able to go past the rpm range,, then set the rpm back down to desired level. The reason for this, is to make the governor work faster with the carb,, with the faster governor operation,, the HP raises about 3 at 540,, and will give it excellent throttle responce. after all of this,, you should have about 10 more hp at 540,, I have done this to all of my Farmall pulling tractors,, all H's,, same results. Now,, if you want to get more,, pull off the head,, if it has a 8043 casting,, you have the good cyl head for the H-350. only one better is the LP head. But if you want to have some machine work done to the 8043 it will match the LP head any day of the week. Mill it about .100 if the head has never been milled before,, if it has go less, Thougoly clean the block and head surfaces,, and then you can get a .020 copper head gasket.. It will increase compression by 15psi per cyl. and will seal up just fine, as long as the block and head deck is good and straight. When I have swaped out the gasket alone,, it was good for 7 more hp. Without changing the carb or dist timing or milling the head. I hope this give you an idea of what can be done to these engines,, I have been building H-450 pullers for about 15 years now,, dyno tuning, and upgrades. Nothing I have mentioned will damage the engine,, as long as you know what you are doing. If you or anyone has any questions or would like a better explanation of what i explained,, just ask,, this works for Farmall H-450 tractors too. Hope this will help,,, CHadS

How do you know if your head has been milled before? I have a H with 8043DD head and I don't know the history on it. Is there any specs I can use to tell. Also how much do those .020 copper gaskets cost for a H with a 3 5/8inch bore?

Get a set of calipers,, You can measure the thickness of the head surface in one of the triangular water ports, A safe thickness for farm engine,, is .095. a puller can have .075-.085. Since a puller does not run in the fields,, the thinner deck will be ok,, Hope this helps,, ChadS

More Power; This writeup for boosting an M engine
is excellent. Since an M from the factory was around 37.9 PTO HP I would sure like to hear a bit later how much these modifications gave in hp boost factor. Good luck in the tractor lab.
