I have the third brush adjusted for max output but I only get about 7 amps at full throttle.
If I ground the field terminal the amps do not increase. With the lights on the gauge will show discharge. Any ideas?

Jim - Assuming the generator's commutator/brushes are in good shape, it's probably got an open circuit in an armature winding. Only fix is to take it in for a rebuild.

BTW - A good generator should develop 12 - 15 amps at full RPM with the field terminal grounded.

Just a thought here, sometimes the brushes and commutator get dirty, and just don't make good contact. Wrap a piece of fine emery cloth around the commutator and polish it up a bit, don't get carried away with this. You can also take a piece of the same emery cloth, wrap it around the commutator with the grit side up, and take a little off the brushes, again, don't get carried away. This may or may not help, but it won't cost you anything to try.
