Mouse nest in Torque Tube

Last weekend I decided to start my tractors and give them a good warm up. In my Super A, I encountered a mouse building a nest in torque tube . He was using material from an old sofa cushion I find quite comfortable on SA seat for and old backside. Since I had the other tractors running and SA was last, I started it and immediately closed doors on shed, and left the tractors running. My thinking was that fumes and carbon monoxide would cause the mouse to rethink this location as a winter home. Corn and beans around me have all been harvested in past month.

Lo, I went to shed today and his home building continues. The little devil ran down the drawbar, me swiping at him with steel bar. He managed to avoid me. Using heavy wire and a screwdriver I removed about 2 quarts of his nest material. I then for want of a better material sprayed an ample supply of penetrating oil in torque tube from both ends. Just so he wouldn't decide to move I did the 130 and 140 as well.

Does anyone have some better suggestions? Mouse has got to go. A friend had this happen with Super C and started tractor without realizing mouse nest was there. It wound up in release bearing and presure plate fingers, breaking the fingers off presure plate as well as bending the activation lever to the release bearing. Costs a lot of time and money.

I guess I haven't been using tractor enough, and mouse decided some creature may as well use them.

Hugh - You were lucky to get 'em just in the torque tube! I was laid up once for a couple months with a broken right arm and could not drive my van (manual transmission). While the car was parked mice built an entire condominium inside the heater. Required disassembly of the dash, then removal, disassembly and a pressure wash of the entire heater and ductwork to get rid of the debris and smell.

More recently I thought it a bit odd being continually dive bombed by a robin after I got the Super M out to pull the cultimulcher thru my mother in law's garden. Only after small, smokey fire started under the hood did I understand why...an enterprising robin had built her nest atop the manifold.

Did you get the eggs cooked right before you stopped? Been up and working before breakfast, but never heard of having the tractor do the cooking.

Hugh, I had lots of mice problems. Went to Sams and bought a 5 pack of electronic rodent repellers for under $20.00. Plugged a few of them in my shop and no more mouse problems :) The ones I got really work.

Hugh, If you recall when I pulled the Super A into the garage this past spring I had the same problem. Well, I pulled the nest out of the torque tube attemptimg to get rid of them. Well they are out of the tractor now, they moved into the attic above the garage! Our outside cat got killed by a dog awhile back, so Im using poison now. Every few days I pull one out of the 5 gal bucket of antifrezze that I emptied out of the Super A. They are persistent, Im trying but so are they.

Hi Hugh, You need to quit feeding your cats up at the house. When they get hungry enough they should take care of your problem, If not new/more cats are in order! Can you put steel wool in this tube? Mice don't chew thru this stuff and you can remove it in the spring when you need to use your tractor

Hugh, some folks swear by fabric softener dryer sheets to keep mice out of unwanted places-Truck and Combine Cabs and the like.
They hate the smell.Or you could do Mothballs?

I liked your reply below about high powered mouse push when the clutch is pushed in!lol!

I rebuilt a engine in a 140 2yrs ago and when I pull the engine I found just about a 5 gal. bucket of acorn shells and wool stuffing. I am glad I didn't try to start it.

Have you ever tried those electronic pest repellers? You just plug them into an outlet and they emit a high pitched noise that supposedly rats and mice just can't stand, I have one in my shop, and it is somewhat effective, but my shop is large enough that I should be running about four. A friend of mine who collects Studebakers claims they work really good. My local farm store carries them. Another thing to try is the Ropax brand of bait, it is in the shape of a one inch or so square cube, with a hole in the middle of each cube, you can nail the cube to a strip of wood, or fasten a wire through it, and place it into a place where the cats can't get to it. You can also pull it out and see how well the little critters like it. I kind of like the cats we have here also, and they have eaten the mice that died from the Ropax with no apparent ill effects.

Hugh,

As you probably already know, that Super A came with a couple covers that made is impossible for mice to gain access to the torque tube. Do yourself a favor and replace them. The damage a corrosive mouse nest can do to the front transmission seal and bearing must be seen to be believed. Providing the covers will be a lot easier than teaching the mice not to pee in their nest.

I made up some tooling so I could make covers for Cubs and have sent many to friends. It's time to make another batch.

I think the Super A is a different style.

George: My tractors have covers as you have shown at the clutch housing end of torque tube. It is just ahead of platform where clutch adjustment is done that they are getting in. I have never seen a cover for the back end. The SC I mentioned also had the cover at front, in fact with that cover present it allows him to build nest just where it gets tangled up with release bearing and presure plate fingers.

What I use and find effective for mice are "Tin Cats". They are a tin trap that catches the mice alive. I put crackers with peanut butter in the tin cats for bait. Find where the mice run, usually along a wall and put the tin trap there with the openings next to the wall.

I also have cats, dogs and birds, so don't like poison.

Good luck.

Hugh, I have 11 kittens ready to send off and 4 adult cats with two ready for spring litters again..cats are almost as bad a problem as mice...if you need some cats I have some very nice ones ..on me..I was cleaning the sediment bowl on the B250 Saturday and there is a huge mouse nest under the tank between the battery box and the torque tube..I need to clean it out of there but I suspect it has been there for many years. I never thought about what the mose nest material could do if it wound around something...Good point..Mike in Exeter Ontario

The mouse urine is corrosive and will ruin seals. I suggest getting a properly fitting hand hole cover. Then the mouse can't get in there.

To start with I pushed the button twice on this one got two threads going at once. To you guys that suggested poisons, I have no problem with these in the right situation. However with cats around, and I do like having cats around, poison not really an option. Secondly, my good better half is an avid bird lover and feeder. There is already some dispute as to whether the birds and the cats can co-exist. I really wouldn't want to add poison at this time. I find I've also become quite attached to the birds as well.

Hi Hugh, sorry to hear of the problem with mice in your garage. I am running a tough battle with mice or a rat here in the garage. They have been taking the poison purchased from CTC, it is in blocks, peanut butter mixed with these blocks, suppose to wear gloves when handling this stuff. I think they store the food in some area for future use. If I cleaned up my garage I could probably see where they are located. Used the glue boards in the green house and they worked great. They are a nusiance, so they have to go. Cheers, Murray

give him some instant mashed potatoes dry and he can not fart or belch and he will bloat up and die. another thing you can do is put some glue boards aound where he has to run to exit the tractor and maybe he will get caught on it. I bout killed my dog last winter with mouse bait so be careful

Bob: I think mouse food is the real problem. In this area there is corn stover within 8' of my shed, and between corn and soybean fields, there is probably a 1000 acres within his reach. We have an old cat and she does an excellent job of making sure they never invade this old brick farmhouse. However she is much like me in cold weather, a fire side cat. That is fine by me as we will not tolerate mice in the house. I do not like the idea of poisons around shed as the cat and other barn cats do frequent my shed. The one thing I notice is the cats tend to get a bit behind this time of year as rodents move from fields to some winter shelter. The mouse doesn't bother me a whole lot as I know he is doomed. I just want to keep him from torque tube until he meets his Waterloo.
