Am looking for a 10 ohm 2 watt resistor that is called for in Bob M's fine diagrams. Ive checked NAPA, all the parts store and Radio Shack. Any suggestions?

Buster: I have no quarrel with Bob's fine diagrams, but I do throw away the 6 volt coil and go and get a new 12 volt coil. Most of the coils on these old tractors are a bit shakey anyhow. It does away with all these add on resistors. In place of Bob's light I use a push button type starter switch that I can hit anytime to excite the alternator. Push button very important as you cant forget and leave it on.

I hope Bob will not be too offended by this, we did have some discussion on the matter and he suggested he may try it on his SM. How did it work Bob?

Buster:

Order part number ALSR3J-10-ND ($1.40, 3 watts, but that's OK) or 10W-2-ND ($0.23, 2 watts) from www.digikey.com. Or use Radio Shack catalog # 271-080 (2 for $0.99).

Check with your local TV repair shop they should have one. If not e-mail me and I'll send you one from my now closed TV shop. Brad

You are referring to the resister in the alternator lead so you can shut it down and keep it from back feeding. I got mine at Radio Shack and we have a pretty small town so would think you could find it there. you can also use either a diode or warning light. When I wired in the one on mine I wrapped tape around it to look good, bad move that sucker gets hot!!

If this is the resistor for the exciter circuit, you can use a value up to 47 ohms.. maybe even more. This serves mostly as a current limiter. The 2 watt rating is more important - if you leave your ignition on for too long without the engine running, this resistor will get hot. The lamp serves a better purpose here - it exhibits a low resistance until it lights, and then the resistance increases when it glows.

Ditto on what Doug said if it's for the exciter for an alternator. You'll be way ahead of the game with the light bulb.

Buster,
In case Bob M is out havin' fun this weekend and you need some quick help --

Not sure where a 10ohm 2 watt resistor would be used. Dropping resistor value for a 12V system into a 6 volt coil should be around 2 ohms rated at around 40 watts to be safe. My memory says 2 watts is a little slim to use on the headlight dimmer or the charge chopper switch on a cutout/generator setup for an M, H, etc??? But -- if you need something quickly, remember that resistors in series are additive - so 2 five ohm, 5 two ohm, 10 one ohm resistors will give you 10 ohms. If you wire same value resistors in parallel, the value of one resistor / number of resistors = resistance, so you probably won't want to go parallel.

Sorry, can't post more relevant info, but if you get no answers, post back with the application and circuit you're working on, and someone can probably answer very quickly.

Atta boy Steve!

You know what you are talking about; keep 'em coming.

Sounds like you might have worked on a fly-back or two in your day. :>)

Ugh... flybacks. Anymore, I'd rather clean the barn than work on a TV or any other kind of CRT. They'll all be obsolete in 10 years anyway, and like knowing how to tune a 10 crystal harmonic synthesizer instead of a PLL, that lost art in electronics will probably die fairly rapidly as flat panels get real cheap real fast.

Try other electronics stores. BTW, this should not be the resistor that goes to the coil. That one has a value of approximately 1.7 ohms, and is at least 15 watts - possibly more. 10 ohms, 2 watts is a common size. Most general-purpose electronics parts stores should stock them.

If its for the resistor that goes between the coil and the switch go back to napa and ask to look at there ballast resistors, you should be able to come up with one that will work.

This resistor is the one that goes to the alternator to stop back up. All NAPA had was a 1 watt. Any websites on line that I could order from?
