I had the same problem with my '49 Farmall M. I ended up having to re-do the entire fuel system, as in a new line, sediment bowl, screens, and a carb rebuild. To do all that, it isn't that hard. What I would do first is shut the fuel off, take the sediment glass bowl off, and turn the fuel on to see if you have dirt at the bottom of the tank which would restrict fuel flow, or to see if your tubes inside the sediment bowl housing is full of rust, dirt, etc. If fuel is good there, put the bowl back on, but make sure to fill the glass bowl up first so an air pocket won't stop fuel flow. Take the fuel line off the carb, and turn the fuel on. If it doesn't run out there at a good pace, then it is not the carb. If is runs out good there, check to see if your float is rubbing on the top side of the carb. That would indicate that the float is stuck at the top of the carb, and not releasing the needle valve. But, I warn you, do not bend the float, or you will have bigger problems. I had to remove the carb off my M 23 times before I figured out that I had a bent float. Bent floates will make you not get enough fuel, or worse yet, make your carb overflow. Best of luck with it!!

If you are having to tease the choke then it is a fuel delivery problem. Probably icing like the others have mentioned. Or it could be a clogged filter where the fuel line screws into the carburetor. There is a small tube shaped filter of wire mesh just inside the carburetor housing where the fuel line attaches. Use a 5/8 wrench and remove to inspect and clean.

Yopu mentioned you were plowing snow, the carb could be icing up,not uncomon with these tractors. If it happens again, shut it off for about a minute, if ti runs better when you restart, it's just icing in the carb.

I agree! We use our Farmall M extensively in the fall to run an auger and in cold weather had icing problems. We made a somewhat unorthodox fix but it works wonders. First find a steel tube that fits over the muffler and still leaves a 3/4" gap around the edge. Find an old disc blade to fit over top of muffler and weld to tube. use some self tapping screws around bottm of tubing to tighten tubing to muffler. At the top of the tubing cut a hole and weld on a pipe which has same outside diameter as air intake with the head removed. Now just find and old radiator hose or car exhaust piping with a 90 degree bend which will fit between muffler and air intake. Voila! Preheated air, and you can run in the coldest weather with no icing probelms, and when spring comes lossen screws and remove, replace air intake head and you are back to original. We have used this for 15 years and works well on our super M/ H as well.

Sounds like you may need to rebuild the carb, as far as the alternator I can't help since I don't know what type it is
