Is their a simple way to test the alternator on the tractor without a test devise or taking it to a parts store? Also where can one find the proper wiring diagrapm. Thanks JF

If it is a Delco alternator, with engine running at half throttle, turn on all the head/tail lights, put your hand on the alternator chasis being carefull not to stick your fingers in the cooling fan, the alternator chasis should become warm to the touch. If it stays cold it is not charging. Reason the Delco alternator uses the chasis as a heat sink for the solid state rectifier/regulator and as current flows thru rectifier the chasis will heat up.

Well, if it has an alternator, it's not an original. It would have come from the factory with a generator and a cutout relay, 6 volts, positive ground.
To test the original system, ground the "F" terminal of the generator with the engine running at about half speed. If it starts to charge, the generator is good, look at the cutout or elsewhere for the problem. If it doesn't charge, good chance the generator needs work.
The service manual will have a wiring diagram.

In that case, measure the battery voltage with the engine stopped, it should be 12.2 - 12.6 volts.
Start the engine and measure it again, it should increase to 13.5 to 14.5 or so, if it's doesn't, the alternator isn't charging the battery.
Does it have an internal or external regulator? If it's external, it may be the culprit.

Also if its external regulated, they make a nice electronic external regulater that will never need adjusting. I got mine a local autoparts (AutoZone).
