Buddy of mine is interested in a 53 Super MD.This is what I know about it,Enigne is froze, manifold is busted and head looks rusted inside, front tires are shot, rears are so-so,has the dist. pump with two way valve, pto spins freely, while pulling it around it went into all gears fine,Clutch released as it should while pulling, rad was full of antifreeze and oil was in the pan,but no signs of water, but we didnt drain it much, tranny was at level and no water came out, brakes worked fine, the change over lever wouldnt move, fuel tank was only slightly rusty and the cap was gone and the hole covered with a Pepsi can, headlights were missing, all the charging system was there as was the starting carb and distributor and the plugs were in place, sheetmetal was there and in tact and really good condition except for some rust pitting and the hole for the muffler was tore up some,no visible oil or water leaks, battery box was rusted out but held him up on the seat, and the steering wheel is shot.Questions are:What would you pay for it and are engine kits and head parts still available, and on average waht would it cost to rebuild it,at least those who have done it,and is there any major things I need to have him check out while rebuilding the engine?he may not get it,but if he does would like to have some input on it.

As Karl did, I completely rebuilt a 1949 MD. I have about the same amount into it as Karl had, about $8000. My block and head were OK so it was a matter of rebuild kit and injector pump/injector rebuild. The engine is where I spent the most money. When I was done, it is my favorite tractor next to my Super H, A, B, and Super C. Like Karl said, there are a lot of questions about why does this diesel tractor have spark plugs. Roger

I completly rebuilt a 1951 MD. When I first got it it wouldn't start on gas so the guy pull started it on diesel. It ended up that the block was cracked so I got an engine block out of a TD-6 dozer. I put in all new bearings, ground crank, new valves in the head, new pistons, rings, cam bearings, new gaskets and seals everywhere, rebuilt the injection pump and checked injectors, carb kit, re-cored the radiator, as well as other things. All in all I would say I have around 9,000-10,000 in the tractor. That includes new tires, paint, all of the parts, fluids, a power steering unit for it, and the price that I paid for the tractor. There are parts available for these tractors. You just need to know where to look. It all depends what you are going to use it for to determine how much you put in it. You might be able to get by with less, it also depends how particular you are. I'm not exactly sure what it cost me to rebuild the engine. I would say between 1000-2000 maybe more if you need a new head and block or major compents like that. Rebuilding the injection pump cost me between 800-1000. I know I have way more in the tractor than it is worth, but to me it is our most fun tractor to drive. At the moment it is probably our most reliable too. It is a costly tractor to repair but it's fun to drive, and funny to see the look on people's faces when they see a diesel engine with a carburetor and ingnition system. My 2 cents worth.

I'm looking into an MD myself. Have been told parts aren't that easy to get, and are quite costly. Might want to look for a one that runs & just needs tires, paint, & such.
