I took my generator into a local shop to have it looked at, they said it was fine but needed a good cleaning and a new relay. So far he isn't having much luck finding one so I called the local case dealer... $80.00 ! wow ! Does anyone have any suggestions on places to find one a bit cheaper ? Perhaps on the web. Just to clarify, I have the cutout which goes with the four position switch and it's a 6volt system.

thanks in advance.

P.S. I'm up in Canada.

Brian,
I think you can buy the cut-out at tractor supply or if you e mail me, I can tell you a place that wants $30 US $ for one.
I have enabled my e mail address !

Brian, What I did was open it up, unsolder the relay and replace it with a diode. The only thing the relay does is allow the gen to charge and not discharge the battery when the gen. isn't running.

A diode? Do you realize that you would need a diode with about a 50 amp rating? And it would have to be mounted in a heat sink. Not exactly an inexpensive deal.

I would replace the cutout relay with a regulator. Takes a little rewiring, but you will end up with a much improved system over the old cutout relay. The generator shop you had work on your generator should have a regulator or at least can get you one. If you want a regulator that mounts on the generator like the cutout relay, those regulators are available aftermarket too. Usually around $40 or so. If you get one that mounts on the generator, no one but you will know that it is not a cutout relay.

You might try looking in a salvage yard. Few generators use a cutout anymore. Honestly, for $80 (yes, probably even Canadian) you can nearly change to an alternator and 12 volts. If you get desperate, you can always put a toggle switch in your ARM line. It would need to be quite stout, though. At least a 30 amp rating. And remember, forgetting to turn the switch off when you turn the engive off will result in a dead battery in very short order.
