i looked at a 49 h tonight. it has really nice dent-less tin 6 volt sys w/ generator starts/nice but it smokes to beat the band. there is no knocking or wierd noises coming from the motor. the idle is smooth and it runs in road gear nice. the asking price is 900. the question is...i am on a limited budget and i can afford rings and that's about it. i can't really afford to get the head done and all indicators show the valves etc are good. in all likleyhood would that get rid of the smoke? the seller is a great person who i have gotten nice tractors from before. he has been doing it for years and has never strayed me wrong in all the years i have known him. what should i do?

How much has the engine been run?
Has it been run on a regular basis or sitting for a long time?
Maybe you just have some stuck rings that will free up with a little running time.
Maybe run some marvel mystery oil through it.

Just some thoughts !

I have had H's that smoked because of a sudden switch from a 30w to a multi grade oil. The detergent additives seem to want to clean thee internals of the cylinder wall. If switched back to a straight 30w they would quit smoking. Also I have seen out of adjustment or dirty carbs cause tehm to smoke a lot. Does it smell like oil burning? Additionally I have had plugged crankcase vent lines cause excessive internal engine pressure which resulted in oil being forced past the rings.

Good Luck ----Pa. Jed.

the smell is oil burning. i'm sure that the restof the engine is ok. it starts good idles good runs through the gears good. the antifreeze is topped off and not getting into the cylinders. i really don't have the money to redo the entire motor. it gives all the indication that it is the rings and not the head and valves. i am going to buy it because it is so straight. i'm just hoping it is the rings and not the rest of the engine. i have never done a ring job so i'm going to be posting here alot and looking into the archives.

Buy it! save up to redo the engine. Might want to pull the rocker cover and or head & see if there's anything obvious, like a sticking valve. Keep a close eye on the oil level. Dad said their F14 went through 20+ quarts of 50weight in 24 hours once when they were disking/planting in a LONG session when he was a kid.

Btw, we still have gradnpa's 3 tractors. The H & M run good, and I've started on the F14.

Well as long as it runs good and doesn't foul plugs I'd run it like it is and save up the money to fix it right a whole kit for it runs around $1000 and thtas new sleeves etc and by the way oil is cheaper then parts lol just make sure you use a good oil and you might even use some thing like a 40 or 50 weight oil like valaline raceing I wouldn't use a malti grade since they are thinner

Jason I have a 48h it smoked real bad fouled #1cyl all the time. I took the pistons out and no.2 compression ring was broke. New rings and rod bearings honed cyl. About 250.00. Hope this helps. Rick P

Jason, If you buy it put it in a field or somewhere and get the engine warmed up good, I have two and usually after getting them about mid range on the temp gage the smoke clears or is reduced to almost none.Ed

Go ahead and buy, and just let it smoke, it's 54, and old enough to smoke
