SMTA repairs

I've noticed in the last couple of days that I'm getting a large quantity of oil under my SMTA after it is parked. I think the culprits are the rear axle seals. My question is how difficult is it to replace those seals? What does it involve?

I'd also like to repair/replace the TA on the SMTA, as it is not operable. However, I'm somewhat scared to because I've never done anything on that scale. That's why I'm seriously thinking of getting a full set of service manuals for all of our farm's tractors (SMTA,H,IH504, IH1086). Do these manuals come on CD-ROM? Are the procedures to repair/replace the TA clear enough that a backyard mechanic like myself can accomplish such a job?

Thanks for your help,
Chad

It is not rocket science , but it's not a model T either . When doing a T/A there are a few things that one must becareful of the one seal and not putting the shaft in backwards . It is Real nice if ya have the special tools but ya can get by .

Chad,
Changing axle seals is not bad. You must jack the tractor up and remove the tire, rim and wheel. (The wheel is quite heavy and you should get help for this.) Remove 4 bolts that hold the endcap on. The seal is housed in this endcap. Probably should make or obtain a new gasket for the endcap.

For the TA, there was a video made for this job featuring the very tractor you have. We have replaced a TA in a 460 before. It involves splitting the tractor, which is not as bad as it sounds. Once the TA is out, you can either rebuild it yourself or just exchange it for a reworked unit. Don't be afraid of it. Like my brother tells me, "It's just nuts and bolts."

Rear axle oil seals aer easy to replace. Remove the erar wheels/tires, slide them off the ends of the axles, remove the 4 small capscrews on the bearing/seal retainer plate. Dig the felt out, scrape the old gasket off, slide the seal, retainer, felt assembly over the axle bar, install & tighten the 4 capscrews, replace the wheel and your done. I smear some grease over the axle bar to save wear & tear on the seals. Parts for My Super H were maybe $10-$12 per side. Never split a tractor to replace a T/A but I would recommend a hard copy manual unless You have a REAL good printer for Your PC.
