The tractor is a farmall cub, year is early 50's.When it is running the throttle has no effect on the engine speed. It runs at almost top speed at all times. To idle it down you have to pull the govenor back. Can someone help me with this? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, shuckpin

I have a Farmall F-20 that the throttle wouldn't open all the way. The magneto turned out to be two notches off from timing (there's notches on the internal gears for timing)...tried everything, and finally tore the mag apart as a last ditch effort...also check the point gap and condition of them....wouldn't hurt to put a new condensor in...they are still available, along with points....all this I did in one day, and you wouldn't believe the power/throttle difference.(my mag was only off 2 notches, but what a world of difference)

Assuming you mean the rod that goes to the carb it self when you refer to the "governor",move the throttle back and forth and see if the rod to the carb is moving, and the linkage from the throttle handle to the governor isnt binding. Also make sure the spring is in place. If all looks fine then its probably a worn throttle shaft,if not its either a problem in the governor,or the woodruff key in the linkage that goes over to the carb is sheared off.

I would check to make sure that all return springs are in place and that no mechanisms are missing.
