My 154 is giving me fits.As long as its cold, meaning engine hasnt been started,it will turn over fine most of the time. After it warms up,it will turn over very slowly,I could hand crank it faster if that were possible on these. Its so bad that I must wait about two hours for it to restart!I have replaced the starting wiring, from thew switch to solenoid, the solenoid itself and wiring from the starter/generator back to the solenoid and the battery cables.I have a new battery and had my local alt/starter shop check out the starter/generator which was fine except for some wore brushes which they replaced. They gave it a good cleaning and lubricating while they had it.I have set my timing right perfect.Like i said it starts fine cold most of the time, but on the rare occasions that it does turn over slow,a release of the key and then turning again will solve that.Im at my wits end!!!Any clues as to what to try next, other than a For Sale ad!!!!! !!!

Get a set of jumper cables, and by-pass all the wiring and solenoid from the batt.to the starter.(expect a pretty good spark when you connect the jumper to the starter terminal.....don't hook to your starter first and then your batt. ....hook the cable on the battery first...then the starter last for safety reasons.)
This will eliminate any faulty wiring, solenoid and battery cables.
make sure that you also ground the "gounded terminal" to the frame.
If she won't turn over then, take the starter back and have it rechecked.
Just guessing here, but....if all wiring etc is good as you say, it sounds like the starter has a problem that only shows up under a heavy load.

I've had car starters do that on a few occasions.....work fine when engine is cold, but not crank a warm engine.

Oh yeah....re-check your timing...too far advanced...can cause this also.

Hope this helps some !

couple of things to check. Do a voltage drop check on the + & - battery cables. To do this use a volt meter with the + lead on the battery terminal. The volt meter - lead on the starter terminal. Crank the starter and the meter will read the voltage drop if it reads more the .2 volts this could be the problem do the same measurement on the ground side. This will show any bad connections or bad cables. Another area to look at is sometimes carbon will build up under the rings and cause the rings to expand when hot. Several companys make a top engine cleaner you can pour in through the carb "almost impossible on a cub" to clean the carbon out.
