Hello all,

Rebuilt my 43 H and the engine runs beautifully for about ten minutes, and then overheats. Here are the symptoms: (1) water does not circulate in top of radiator at first, (2) engine gets hot and water starts to circulate then boils over, (3) at boiling point water at top of radiator is too hot to touch, water at bottom of radiator and pipe to water pump is cool, (4) radiator has new top and bottom tanks, core is older.

Since the tractor has new paint I want to identify the problem before taking things apart. Any ideas?

Randy

Hello all,

Thank you for responding.

I fixed my over heating problem today. I am embarrassed to say what it was. I work on my tractors as a hobby. Sometimes they will sit for months before I am able to work on them. In the case of the H, I painted it and then placed a rag in the water pump inlet to keep the weather and bugs out. Weeks later when I assembled the radiator and hoses I forgot to take the rag out.

The tractor runs fine now and stays at the bottom end of green (run). I may have broken the propeller shaft in the water pump, I am not sure. It may be cooling by siphon alone.

Never a dull moment working on these wonderful machines.

Randy

If the water at the top of the radiator is too hot to touch and the bottom of the radiator is cool, then you've likely got a plugged radiator or a water pump that's not doing it's job, A stuck thermostat could be doing it too, restricting the flow. Quickest test is remove the thermostat, button it up and run it to see if that fixes it.

I agree with J, it could only be one of two things, the therostat, or you need to get the core rodded out, I'm surprised the radiator shop didn't do that when it was apart, if they did, then it has to be the thermostat

RANDY, PERHAPS THE THERMOSTAT IS BAD OR PUT IN THE WRONG WAY. I WOULD REMOVE IT AND TRY ANOTHER ONE OR LEAVE IT OUT AND TRY IT AGAIN.
