'46 H brake bearings

My wife has a '46 H that had belonged to her Dad. She liked driving it, but I didn't like the fact that she couldn't stop. I got new brake bands and when I took the brake covers off, I found (as you all can probably guess) oil. So I checked the play on the brake shafts and they are both pretty loose. I've seen on ealier posts that you should pull off the top plate (which looks like you have to remove a whole pile of stuff (seat, shifter, bunch of other stuff, etc.) There are bolts on a plate that holds the bearings, can you just that those off of the sides and change bearings that way? Or should you tear off the top of the tractor. What is the best way to do this?? P.S. My wife wants to learn how to fix "her" tractor herself....

Thanks.....

Craig, I think that's great that she wants to learn to fix her tractor!

I am currently replacing all gaskets and seals on my '40 H.

I was looking at my brake shaft bearings too, since I had oil leaking around them.

It looks to me like this job is going to go so much easier since I ALREADY have my tranny cover off. I can not see a way to do that job without taking the tranny cover off. But don't take my word for it, I'm VERY new to Farmalls, and maybe someone knows a quicker way.

Take care, and most of all, you all have fun with the H.

Bill

You Have to take the cover off and remove the bull gear. If you don't you will break the housing off behind the Bull gear and all that does is lead to alot of swearing and you will be very mad at yourself. I personaly know someone who has done this. :>(

Jim's right, pull top cover, remove bull gears and cages. Not a bad job to do. I inherited a '45 H with same problem only relative tried to pry cage out and broke it!! "Well Ollie, another fine mess you've gotten us into..."
