Just purchased a 560 The head gaskets is leaking and needs to be replaced. Talked to several people and they stated this is common with the 560 diesels. Is this true and also are they good tractors.

560 series was a good tractor in its day, built 58-63, it has aged 40 years now though, if you plan on using it hard check out the rear axle bearings, the head gasket on diesels was a problem, particularly if its turbocharged, make sure about sleeve protrusion and top of deck straight, check head for warp, remove 2 threads from the tapped holes for head bolts (never seen studs in this engine), this keeps the deck from distorting around each hole, replace with high quality grade 8 cap screws, Case-IH or better.

bryan, 560 diesel tractors are good tractors. The hesd gasket problem is due to the tractor being started with starting fluid or the head being untrue. If the glow plug system is not in good shape it is a must for starting the tractor right.check the head, when replaceing the head gasket.True it, then check the glow plug system.
when starting the tractor you will need to heat it for at least one minute be for tring to start the tractor.TO make the tractor run to it's best be sure the injector's are in good shape/good spray patern. Hope this a help to you.

Mark: That is quite interesting, I could never figure where the D-282 got that reputation, as I put over 10,000 hours each on two of them and still no head gasget problems. So the problem all along was the dummy with the ether can. I can remember people being around while starting my 560 or 656 and making remarks like, there must be something wrong you shouldn't need to use glow plugs in summer. I have actually heard tell of people using ether and not the glow plugs even though the glow plugs were working. It was simply because they believed they shouldn't need to use glow plugs in summer.

Hugh, The 560,or D-282 is a pre-combustion engine. The glow plugs are in the pre-cup just under the injector. They screw in to the injector body. When heated they heat the area in the pre-cup. When trying to start the engine with out the glow plugs the cylinder air temp.is not hot enough to make the engine fire correctly. When starting fluid is placed in the cylinder it is not ignited at the proper time, as direct injected engines. This is part of the reason for blown head gaskets.

Make sure you replace the studs for the head, as the new ones are designed not to stretch and the old ones will. On these engines new studs make a ton of difference. With that said, a valve grind set and new studs and nuts will put you back in business.

I've had a few of those heads off and all of them had bolts. Was there a change?

been a while since I dealt with one, cant remember outside the fact that the D282 engine is notorious for stretching head bolts/studs.

I've heard that too, we changed one at 7000+ hours so I can't complain about that. I wouldn't trade our 560 for anything I've ever tried.
